How we do SEL...

Made by educators for educators, our learning approach creatively explores a wide range of topics such as emotions, identity, inclusivity, cultural responsiveness, and interdependence. We incorporate strategies and practices that contain a trauma-informed lens to meet the nuance of our student's experiences. We do this by creating engaging content via animated video lessons, curated worksheets, and group activities.

Our mission is helping students understand themselves, their relationships, and their role in the greater community.

Who is "Ms. O" ?

Karen Ogbugbulu is the creator and founder of SEL Kids Learning (Also known as SEL Kids with Ms. O) Having taught in schools for the past 17 years as a classroom teacher and school administrator, Karen brought her love for learning, art, and animation to create a program that spoke most to her heart, passions, and talents.

“ I was a latch-key kid of the 90’s. My parents were Nigerian immigrants, and no one in school taught us how to navigate the complexities of our emotions and circumstances. I was often the quiet kid, isolated, shy, reserved, and performed low academically. Often, I was overlooked because of my quiet nature, and assumed to be a “good” kid. I escaped into my solitude through reading, art, and a super vivid imagination. I finally learned the importance of self-awareness, self-management, and communicating my needs in my various relationships once I got into my thirties. Many teachers, principals, assistant principals, social workers, and counselors, have similar stories to mine. Either growing up in trauma, minimizing their pain and complex life experiences, but not knowing they were inadvertently drawn to education to heal the parts of themselves wounded in childhood. Our students don’t have to experience this, they can learn what they need and how to advocate for themselves now, in their formative years, where it will be most impactful for the rest of their lives. Even as a popular movement and buzzwords like Social and Emotional Learning, it tends to be done as a kitschy initiative, barely scratching the surface, instead of a vital tool to help us all be better. I want students to have the agency to know themselves, love themselves, and know they matter past deep breaths and calm corners.”

Karen has morphed her passion into education working with teachers, schools, organizations, and parents on how to implement Social and Emotional Learning with purpose. Karen is still in education and works as a school administrator in Los Angeles County. Karen has a bachelors in Psychology from Texas Southern University, and a Masters in Education Leadership from UCLA. She was nominated by the Los Angeles Clippers as the June Teacher of the month in 2021, and wrote her first illustrated memoir Raw Black Honey around Art and healing. Karen is a visual artist, foodie, surfer, and fashionista. She enjoys traveling, learning about various cultures, and bonding with her friends and family.
